Encountering God in the Language of the Senses
Before belief is articulated, it is often sensed; Anglican worship engages the whole body through sight and sound, movement and stillness, word and symbol—forming faith through rhythm, space, and shared practice as much as through explanation. This session offers a gentle introduction to sensory faith before turning to the Theology of the Thurible, exploring incense, smoke, and the tools of the craft, their theological meaning and liturgical use, and concluding with a hands-on opportunity to make some smoke and practise the art of swinging a thurible. Presented by Kevin Lapthorn —a session for trainee thurifers and the curious alike!!
Encountering God through Anglican Eyes
Archbishop-emeritus of Brisbane Philip Aspinall draws on a lifetime of pastoral and episcopal leadership to reflect on how Anglicanism forms a way of seeing, praying, and engaging the world with faith, humility, and hope
Encountering God in Space Exploration
Rev’d Deb will preach at a service of Choral Evensong at St John’s Cathedral on the prophetic science of Carl Sagan. Carl Sagan (1934–1996) was an American astrophysicist, planetary scientist, and bestselling author who brought cosmic wonder to millions through his books and the landmark series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. He combined scientific rigour with a sense of poetic awe, famously describing Earth as a “pale blue dot” suspended in a sunbeam. A prophet of the atomic and space age, Sagan warned of technological arrogance, nuclear devastation, and ecological collapse. His legacy invites us to see ourselves not as separate from the cosmos but as star-born participants in its unfolding, called to wield knowledge with conscience and care for our fragile, shared home.
Encountering God in Deliverance Ministry
Deliverance ministry asks how God meets people in places of deep struggle, naming the realities of suffering, oppression, and healing while discerning what it means to seek wholeness in Christ. Rev’d Claye Middleton draws on pastoral practice and theological reflection to engage deliverance ministry with care, accountability, and a strong commitment to the dignity and wellbeing of all people.
Encountering God in Scientific Enquiry
Scientific enquiry invites us into practices of attention, humility, and wonder—ways of knowing that do not diminish faith, but can deepen our awe before a mysterious and generative God. Peter Catt brings long experience at the intersection of theology, science, and education, to help us explore how rigorous questioning and faithful imagination can belong together.
