Lent Unfiltered: A Visual Journey
Take up photography (or drawing, or another visual artform) for lent!
Take a photo (or draw a picture if you prefer) every week as you think about the theme of each week in lent. (Download themes.)
You don’t have to take a photo every day. You don’t have to meet any artistic standard. This is about practising attention, not perfection.
Some guidelines: Don’t stress! Keep it simple! No faces without permission. You’re allowed to miss days.
At the end of each week ask: What did I notice that I usually miss? What surprised me? What was hard to photograph?
Optional: Share the journey! Send your photos/drawing to Rev Deb 0457 519 899 or rector@kenbrookang.org.au by Thursday morning each week to be displayed in the parish and on parish social media. (Published images remain anonymous unless you ask me to include your name.)

A Beautiful Lent (Lent study)
The liturgical year is not simply a cycle to observe or a set of traditions to maintain. It is a way of being formed—slowly, patiently, and ever more deeply—by the story of God’s love in the world.
Drawing on “A Beautiful Year” by Diana Butler Bass, this Lent Study helps us encounter the church year as a living rhythm that shapes perception, expands our faith, and widens our capacity for mercy and justice.
Through scripture, memory, and attentiveness to contemporary life, these reflections remind us that Lent becomes not a detour from ordinary life, but a way of inhabiting it more truthfully.
Tuesdays 10:30-11:30am with Rev’d Deb in the courtyard at Holy Spirit, Kenmore. Sign up at the back of the church or email rector@kenbrookang.org.au

Encountering God: Lenten Meditations
Inspired by the book Encountering God, these Wednesday night meditations offer a quiet, spacious time to attend to the many ways God meets us—through scripture and silence, through breath and beauty, through the ordinary textures of daily life.
In the midst of busy weeks and noisy lives, this midweek pause invites us, through song, scripture, reflection and silence, to notice where God may already be at work—in our bodies, our questions, our relationships, and our world.
Whether you are carrying certainty or doubt, weariness or longing, you are welcome.
Come as you are.

Encountering God in the Language of the Senses
Before belief is articulated, it is often sensed; Anglican worship engages the whole body through sight and sound, movement and stillness, word and symbol—forming faith through rhythm, space, and shared practice as much as through explanation. This session offers a gentle introduction to sensory faith before turning to the Theology of the Thurible, exploring incense, smoke, and the tools of the craft, their theological meaning and liturgical use, and concluding with a hands-on opportunity to make some smoke and practise the art of swinging a thurible. Presented by Kevin Lapthorn —a session for trainee thurifers and the curious alike!!

Encountering God in Space Exploration
Rev’d Deb will preach at a service of Choral Evensong at St John’s Cathedral on the prophetic science of Carl Sagan. Carl Sagan (1934–1996) was an American astrophysicist, planetary scientist, and bestselling author who brought cosmic wonder to millions through his books and the landmark series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. He combined scientific rigour with a sense of poetic awe, famously describing Earth as a “pale blue dot” suspended in a sunbeam. A prophet of the atomic and space age, Sagan warned of technological arrogance, nuclear devastation, and ecological collapse. His legacy invites us to see ourselves not as separate from the cosmos but as star-born participants in its unfolding, called to wield knowledge with conscience and care for our fragile, shared home.

Advent Study: Listening to the Music of the Soul
Bishop Guli Francis-Dehqani draws out the connections between the magnificat, advent themes and her own experiences - and invites us to do the same. She explores how angels continue speaking to us today; how fear of what might happen prevents us from living well in the present; how daring to dwell in darkness and silence can lead to new life; and how important it is to find light and space, signified by the candles of Advent. Each chapter is linked to a piece of music, as per her popular broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs.
Advent Study: Light of the World
Author, professor, and biblical scholar Amy-Jill Levine explores the biblical texts surrounding the story of the birth of Jesus, exploring connections of the Gospel stories to the Old Testament, the role of women in first-century Jewish culture, the importance of Mary's visitation and the revolutionary implications of Mary's Magnificat, the census and the stable, and the star of Bethlehem and the flight to Egypt.

Quiet Afternoon: Season of Creation with Patrick Oliver (Part 3)
This series of three Saturday afternoons will be offered as a way for us to reflect upon the wonder and mystery of God’s Creation. We will begin with the scriptures, and see how the Creation story provides a rich template for all that is genuinely creative and life-giving. From there, we’ll reflect upon how respect for the earth and for everything created springs out of our being able to appreciate Beauty, and how beauty and creativity weave together. Finally, we’ll spend some time pondering how Australian fauna and flora can reveal the Paschal Mystery, and how our faith invites us to be caught up in living fully the seasons of the Christian Pilgrimage.
